Luke 10:38-42 · AMPC

Now while they were on their way, it occurred that Jesus entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha received and welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was listening to His teaching. But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]! But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.

Contemplation

It is a great blessing for anyone to have the privilege to welcome the Lord into our house. According to verse 38 of Luke chapter 10 of the scripture, the word of the Lord says,

“Now while they were on their way, it occurred that Jesus entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha received and welcomed Him into her house.”

When we have such great and very important persons in our midst, it becomes the responsibility of the one playing the host to ensure that this person is well taken care of. It therefore becomes the responsibility of this person to do all they can, to take care of the guest. At this time it will be expected that everyone who is helping this person playing the host, will put in their very best to make it a glorious time of sharing the food. The scripture in verse 39 revealed to us that Martha was not alone in the house. It says, “And she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was listening to His teaching.”

Some times, it may look like a great disrespect when one is expected to take full the responsibility of the work given to him or her, but at that time, it seems every line of the sentence is so important that if you stop to attend to the need in it’s place, something very important may be missing. This is why somehow, that which the fellow intends to do seems to have been ignored and it seems to cause some pain in the heart of those who she supposed to be working with. The truth is that, this individual is not disrespectful on a normal day, but the words of the Lord seems to be pouring forth a deep spiritual truth that seems to have held her spell bound. This Mary has heard about the Lord before, but right now, she has the opportunity to drink in the words from the Lord and it was too real for her to ignore. She actually got stuck there listening.

It was when this amazing words were interrupted by the complain of the sister who could no longer stand Mary completely engrossed in swallowing the message, that she was moved to speak to get the attention of the Lord at this point. In verse 40, please take note of what the scripture says,

“But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]!”

This seems genuine, but when the Lord began to speak, the scripture says in verse 41,

“But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things;”

Did you notice that the Lord pointed out that Martha have allowed herself to become anxious and troubled about many things. It was not just one thing, but the Lord said, many things. May we not let the anxiety of many things take over our peace of mind in Jesus mighty name. Amen.

Beloved, from this scripture it seems like whenever we allow somethings to attach themselves to trouble us, we begin to walk out of faith and give room for those things to hinder us. The Lord Jesus went on to say in verse 42,

“There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.”

From this scripture, it wasn’t like the Lord is encouraging us to be disobedient to authority, but it was more about the fact that Mary was dealing with some issues before now and when she heard the words of the Lord Jesus, she decided to hold on to the portion which shall not be taken away from her. Hallelujah! The Lord saw what was happening to her and this is the reason why the Lord would speak to us. If we are wise to take that serious, the truth remains that this will not be taken from her. Let the Lord have His way in your life.

Practical issues

The Lord has given us some amazing opportunities, don’t let anything pass you by. Shalom!
