Isaiah 40:17-22 · AMPC

17 All the nations are as nothing before Him; they are regarded by Him as less than nothing and emptiness (waste, futility, and worthlessness). 18 To whom then will you liken God? Or with what likeness will you compare Him? 19 The graven image! A workman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts silver chains for it. 20 He who is so impoverished that he has no offering or oblation or rich gift to give [to his god is constrained to make a wooden offering, an idol; so he] chooses a tree that will not rot; he seeks out a skillful craftsman to carve and set up an image that will not totter or deteriorate. 21 [You worshipers of idols, you are without excuse.] Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? [These things ought to convince you of God’s omnipotence and of the folly of bowing to idols.] Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22 It is God Who sits above the circle (the horizon) of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; it is He Who stretches out the heavens like [gauze] curtains and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in,

Contemplation

The Lord our God is worthy of all the praise and the glory. He reigns in majesty and splendor above all. The Lord God Almighty rules forever and ever over the entire universe. Blessed be the glorious name of the Lord, for He is worthy to be praised.

The word of the Lord went on to ask a question that we need deep insight to understand. It says,

“To whom then will you liken God? Or with what likeness will you compare Him?”

To this question many have tried to provide some answers, but it is very limited and a far cry from that which was expected. In verse 19 it says,

“The graven image! A workman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts silver chains for it.

20 He who is so impoverished that he has no offering or oblation or rich gift to give [to his god is constrained to make a wooden offering, an idol; so he] chooses a tree that will not rot; he seeks out a skillful craftsman to carve and set up an image that will not totter or deteriorate.”

It is so unfortunate that one decides to take one of those things that the Lord God created only for him to bow down to the work of his hand as his creator. it is so unfortunate that the one who is unable to offer something of great value, decided to bow down to that which was made from wood by a craftsman. It is so unfortunate that the foolishness in the heart of man has blinded him from taking the right decision.

In verse 21 the scripture went on to ask the question that should have helped this man to come to reality if only he was sensitive? So it says, “[You worshipers of idols, you are without excuse.] Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? [These things ought to convince you of God’s omnipotence and of the folly of bowing to idols.] Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?”

It became so obvious that one has to be spiritually blind for that soul to ignore God’s omnipotence that is at work all around. When one decides to follow the decisions of his heart without thinking right, a number of things will certainly go wrong.

The word of the Lord in chapter 22 says,

“It is God Who sits above the circle (the horizon) of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; it is He Who stretches out the heavens like [gauze] curtains and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in,”

It is so amazing for human beings to have the divine opportunity to bow in worship to the Lord who sits above the circle of the earth and from this point it becomes so obvious that the inhabitants were like grasshoppers. The Lord our God is the one who stretches out the heavens like curtains and this is so wonderful. To God Almighty be all the glory. Hallelujah!

Practical issues

It is a great blessing for us to bow in worship to the Lord for the opportunity He has given us to be able to comprehend His awesomeness. But even if we don’t have clear understanding of all these, it will be a great privilege to just love and serve the Lord from the depths of our hearts. But the Lord has even given us greater understanding to love and adore Him. To Jesus be all the glory. Shalom!
