Luke 10:25-28 · AMPC

And then a certain lawyer arose to try (test, tempt) Him, saying, Teacher, what am I to do to inherit everlasting life [that is, to partake of eternal salvation in the Messiah’s kingdom]? Jesus said to him, What is written in the Law? How do you read it? And he replied, You must love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. And Jesus said to him, You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live [enjoy active, blessed, endless life in the kingdom of God].

Contemplation

A good number of people try to act nice and make themselves look great in the eyes of others but the Lord God Almighty knows the intent of our hearts. When we try to make ourselves look smart in the eyes of others, we only end up revealing how careless we are before the Lord.

From verse 25 of Luke chapter 10, the scripture reveals the intent of the heart of man when it says,

“And then a certain lawyer arose to try (test, tempt) Him, saying, Teacher, what am I to do to inherit everlasting life [that is, to partake of eternal salvation in the Messiah’s kingdom]?”

It is so unfortunate that this lawyer went on to include himself in this test when he decided to ask our Lord Jesus. I feel it would have been better if he had asked this question with a heart that is sincere to know the right thing to do. But when he asked to show how smart he was, the Lord responded with a question. In verse 26 the Lord Jesus asked him a simple question,

“Jesus said to him, What is written in the Law? How do you read it?

This really went ahead to reveal the area of his life as well of others now exposed as he tried to answer from verse 27,

“And he replied, You must love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”

We must be careful not to end up revealing our foolishness before others when we could have simply trusted the Lord to help us. From his response to this question, we learnt from verse 28 the following,

“And Jesus said to him, You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live [enjoy active, blessed, endless life in the kingdom of God].”

After this reply, the man was quiet without any further questions. There is the need for us to be careful how we speak especially in public.

Practical issues

May the Lord help us to discern the things that are before us. May we not make a fool of ourselves in Jesus mighty name. Amen. Lord, please use me for your praise and glory. Shalom!
